While the news that the spread of COVID-19 is slowing down in Ontario is hopeful, it doesn’t change the fact that our elderly population has been disproportionately affected. As of May 26, 2020, Canadian news outlets have reported the Canadian military’s findings of the troubling conditions within Ontario’s long-term care homes. For many families, this news provides confirmation of the devastating conditions that elderly family members may have already endured or been exposed to. 

What Do The Military’s Findings Say About Ontario’s Long-Term Care Homes?

Findings reported by the Canadian military include medical and technical issues involving infection control, standard practice, training and staffing, and abusive behaviour toward residents, and more. These findings are very suggestive of negligence o the part of LTC Homes.

This information does not come as a surprise to those who have recently lost family members to COVID-19 in long-term care homes, with over 75% of Ontario’s COVID-19 related deaths having been within this population. This devastating death-toll has prompted an independent commission into the province’s long-term care system starting in September.
